Foods and Herbs for Liver Health

The liver is the largest organ in our bodies and is a vital part of our day. Most of us are guilty of taking our liver health for granted and don’t consider the hard work it does until something goes wrong. While we aren’t able to feel our liver working, it plays a vital part in nearly all body functions from skin conditions to detoxifying our blood. Hanna’s List of Foods to Support Liver Health

Glass of carrot juice– To detoxify the liver drink carrot juice after breakfast.

– A healing breakfast for the liver (and intestine) is 2 tablespoons ground flaxseed, 2 tablespoons whey, and 2 apples peeled and finely grated. Mix these ingredients and serve with honey.

– To stimulate the liver mix a ½ teaspoon of nutmeg into one cup hot water, drink.

– Hanna listed white beans, artichokes, yams, allspice, and apples as being food for the liver.

Herbs for Liver Support

Milk Thistle is a powerful herb for liver health and has been used for thousands of years as a remedy for liver ailments. The function of this herb in your liver is to protect from toxins, including certain drugs such as acetaminophen (Tylenol), which causes damage in high doses. Milk Thistle has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and is believed to assist the liver in repairing itself by growing new cells. This herb is often suggested as a treatment for cirrhosis of the liver, mushroom poisoning, and viral hepatitis.

Dandelion Root is a liver strengthener, cleanser, and is useful in improving liver function. Dandelion leaf is often used to help with liver disorders. This “weed” that is a nuisance in our yards is actually a great benefit to our bodies!
