How to Cleanse Your Body – Proper Order of Cleansing

April 13th, 2012 · 37 Comments · Cleansing and Detox

If you hear someone say they are “doing a cleanse”, have you ever wondered what part of their body that would benefit? Cleanses rid the body of accumulations, intruders, toxins, and other deposits to promote healthy function of the entire system. Unfortunately there is no one product, herb, or dietary regime that will cleanse all parts of the body but there are steps you can follow to thoroughly cleanse your system. If you’re considering cleansing or detoxing your body but don’t know where to start, keep reading to learn the order to cleanse for the healthiest you possible.

Proper Order of Cleansing Step One: Parasites

Step one in the proper order of cleansing is to remove any parasites from the system.

Step one in the proper order of cleansing is to remove any parasites from the system.

The idea of parasitic intruders is an uncomfortable one but a parasite cleanse is the first step in the process. If parasites are present in your system, it’s important to expel them so that their waste and toxins can’t overwhelm your body. The Wormwood Kit from Kroeger is a month long program that checks parasite populations and their reproductive cycles. In traditional herbalism, bitter, digestive tonic herbs are used to paralyze and kill parasites in the digestive tract as well as controlling their eggs and improving digestive secretions, a natural protection against parasite overgrowth. At the same time, the bitter principles help to increase elimination, so that the parasites’ toxins may be excreted at a faster rate. Without fully cleansing your system of parasites, the effectiveness of cleanses to follow will suffer. Keep in mind that everyone can benefit from the Wormwood Kit, even if you feel you don’t have parasites in your system.

Proper Order of Cleansing Step Two: Bowel

Following the proper order to cleanse your organs allow them to function properly!

Following the proper order to cleanse your organs allow them to function properly!

The next step in a full body cleanse is the bowels. The Bowel Cleanse Kit is a powerful way to maintain a healthy digestive system through an effective cleanse containing Turmeric, Black Walnut Hull Extract (extra-strength) and Fennel. The kit lasts 3-4 weeks and allows your body to release any disturbances you may be experiencing in elimination as well as preparing the system for cleanses to follow. If your bowels are not moving properly and you have not taken the time to cleanse, then the toxins that will be released in cleanses for the kidneys and liver will overload your system and the process will be fruitless. The health of your colon is important and a bowel cleanse is a great choice annually, especially in the fall of the year when it is believed that the colon innately lets go of its toxins most easily. Considering your bowels are your body’s “waste basket”, you’ll want to make sure they are always functioning properly and that, if needed, you cleanse.

Proper Order of Cleansing Final Steps: Gall Bladder, Kidneys, Liver

Once you have completed a parasite and bowel cleanse, you are ready to cleanse other internal organs important to the proper functioning on your system. Eliminative organs work overtime so providing a clean-up is a useful way to encourage proper function and keep your system running smoothly. Steps to take at this point include a gall bladder cleanse, as well as specific kits to cleanse the kidney and liver with each of these taking less time to complete than the 4 weeks that the Wormwood and Bowel Cleanse Kits do.

Ageless Remedies from Mother's Kitchen

A simple 2 day cleanse is an effective and natural way to cleanse the gall bladder and address gall stones. Hanna recommended this cleanse in her book, Ageless Remedies from Mother’s Kitchen: Drink 8 ounces of apple juice at 8 am with 16 ounces to follow every two hours (10, 12, 2, 4, and 6). Be sure you are drinking natural juice, made without chemicals, eat nothing else that day. On the second day, repeat the apple juice schedule then at bedtime take 4 ounces of olive oil; you may flush it down with hot lemon juice. This quick cleanse allows your gall bladder to soften through the consumption of apple juice and the acids it contains then forces the gall bladder to empty with the olive oil and hot lemon juice. Note: Hanna’s gall stone cleanse is an effective home remedy but not one that is necessary in the steps associated with properly cleansing the body. Should you choose to skip this remedy from Hanna, the Liver Cleanse Kit outlined below will cleanse your liver and gall bladder simultaneously.

The Kidney Works Kit contains several products that function to cleanse the kidneys and provide a lift! A special tea (blended with Hydrangea root, Gravel root, and Marshmallow root), along with Uva Ursi capsules, Ginger capsules, Magnesium Oxide, Goldenrod tincture, Vitamin B-6, Black Cherry Concentrate, and Vegetable Glycerin  pack this kit that lasts for 2-4 weeks. This combination of products functions to remove toxic accumulations from the nodules and fatty tissues of the kidneys which also promotes blood cleaning. Learn more about kidney health, foods, and cleansing here.

The final step in the full body cleanse is the liver, the body’s most vital organ and also the largest. Our livers receive blood directly from digestive organs (the spleen, pancreas, and gall bladder) and filters out waste and toxins, converting them into substances that can be carried safely out of the body. Think of the work the liver does, even without the introduction of alcohol or medications, and you can begin to appreciate the need for a cleanse. The importance of this organ being last in a full body cleanse is that the path to eliminate should be clear. If we have not properly cleansed our bowels then the cleansing of other organs will result in toxins from those cleanses leaking into our bloodstream, forcing the liver to work even harder. If the path is clear for the liver then the cleanse will be a successful one.  The Liver Cleanse Kit  rejuvenates the liver and the gall bladder with Epsom salt, Black Walnut Extract, Olive Oil, and Ornithine. This cleanse lasts for 2 to 4 days and completes the final step of the full body cleansing process.

Proper Order of Cleansing: Follow Up

Internal cleansing is an integral part of maintaining health and an indication that a cleanse is needed is true if any of the following signals are present and chronic: constipation, sluggish appetite with low energy, skin eruptions, digestive disturbances, chronic mucous accumulations, and sometimes depression and poor resistance.

The idea that “more is better” or “stronger is better” does not necessarily apply to cleansing; “Easy does it” is a better motto. Start each cleanse slowly to avoid weakening the system and begin with mild herbs then graduate to stronger ones only when necessary.  Some cleanses may strip the friendly bacteria from your system so consider taking a probiotic to reinstate the balance in your body once the cleanse is complete. Extra water consumption is a must during cleansing, as well as supplementing your body with a whole food, low fat, high fiber, low sodium, and a potassium rich diet. Generally, fruits tend to increase the tendency towards cramping and it may be best to temporarily avoid them. Physical exercises, breathing exercises, herbal baths, saunas, massage, and skin brushing help to ease the detoxification process.

Traditional cleansing techniques can help to bring you renewed vitality in the spring or anytime during the year when you feel you need a lift. With care and attention to these guidelines and your body’s own signals, you can have a safe and rejuvenating cleanse. Listen to your body—if you are in a weakened condition or are experiencing pain and discomfort from your cleanse, consider lessening the amount or strength of herbs you are using.

Following the proper steps to cleanse your entire system will result in your body feeling healthy and functioning at its peak. Excuse me, but the order in which to cleanse the body is as follows: first bowels/parasites (together) then the liver and blood, then the kidneys and gall bladder, then the adrenals.

  • Sara Beth

Hi, Tamara. Thanks for your comment, however, it sounds like the order of cleansing you are referring to is not based on the work of Hanna Kroeger. Doing the Bowel Cleanse and Parasite Cleanse at the same time is often too many products to take at once. Hanna recommended getting parasites out of the system as a priority. Cleansing the bowels before cleansing the liver and gallbladder makes it easier for the body to process out the toxins released from the liver/gallbladder cleanse. Because of the physiology of the liver and gallbladder, they are cleansed at the same time. Kidney cleansing is important as well and should be done after a parasite cleanse. These are general guidelines for doing cleansing protocols, but Hanna certainly targeted priorities for each person. For example, if someone has known kidney congestion, they would want to do the Kidney Cleanse directly after the parasite cleanse. Everyone is different so a little bit of common sense in this regard goes along way. Cleansing the blood, lymphatic fluid etc. is something that usually the body will take care of if the major organs are cleaned up. In cases where there is something specific going on, Hanna does have products to help address that person’s health challenges. Thanks again for your comment!

All of the research I’ve done thus far seems to support the order mentioned in the article. I would say.. If you have a problem where all three systems need a cleanse.. try them in a different order and just see what happens. :) not fun!

I agree! I just had a horrible experience. I was directed to do a parasite cleanse then stop for a week to start a liver cleanse. My problem that later I found out was eczema, turned into my face and mouth swelling horribly and the eczema getting totally out of control. I am now sensitive to corn, wheat, peanuts, and dairy.

I have a question for Hanna’s Herb shop:
Regarding this order of cleansing, at which stage should a person do a Candida Cleanse?

    • Sara Beth

Thanks for your question, Christine. Hanna believed that parasites and candida overgrowth often went hand-in-hand so addressing parasites before candida is a great place to start. The candida cleanse doesn’t fit in any order within this list as this is specific to properly cleansing and detoxing the system as a whole.

Parasites have far surpassed epidemic levels in the United States, with most sources estimating that a massive 85% of Americans have parasitic infections. Because of this, we recommend a parasite cleanse every six months, care in choosing restaurants, and cleaning up after exposure to animals. Unfortunately, most conventional doctors are not trained in the treatment of parasites. It is only when parasites are visually seen that American doctors will suspect them, which requires a horrific case. There are many symptoms of parasites that people express in daily life, believing that these are completely normal. While sickness has become normal in the modern lifestyle, it does not have to be. The amount of damage that can be caused by parasites is virtually limitless, because many are small enough to travel anywhere in the body through the bloodstream. They exist by robbing the body of nutrients. Parasites are the root cause of Lupus, with all other symptoms being secondary to the parasitic infection. Therefore, Lupus cannot be cured without a parasite cleanse. colon cleansers Of course, Lupus is said to be just another “incurable disease” and an “autoimmune disorder”, according to the conventional doctors. Identifying The Different Parasites, Roundworms – Living in the stomach and intestines, these worms enter through undercooked and contaminated food. Remember that the manure which is used in farming may be contaminated with worms. Always wash your hands after dealing with pets, or their feces., Heartworms – It is extremely rare for these to occur in humans. In the few cases which have been seen, they usually occur as a single worm in the lungs, rather than the heart. They cannot be spread through from one animal (or human) to another, but must be spread through mosquitoes., Tapeworms – Enter the body through undercooked beef, fish or pork. They live in the lower intestinal tract. Use gloves and wash thoroughly after preparing meat for consumption., Pinworms – Living in the intestinal tracts and lungs, these small white worms come out at night to lay eggs around the anus. parasite cleanse The eggs hatch and the worms reenter through the anus. If the human scratches during this time, the eggs lay under the fingernails, spreading to wherever the person touches. It is believed that they are small and lightweight enough to become airborne, leading people to inhale them. This is how they can live inside the lungs. Perhaps smoking does have a benefit, after all., Hookworms and Threadworms – These can be found in contaminated drinking water, or they can enter directly through the feet. They are tiny in size, and can enter through the soles of the feet, even without any open wounds. Always wear shoes when walking outside. These worms are unique because they have a lifespan of several years, and the eggs can incubate for up to 10 years.

Many years ago, I used Hannah’s book to help a friend with gall stones. It seems to me that one is supposed to lie on your side after drinking the olive oil/lemon juice and then pull one of your legs up toward your chest using bent knee. Can you please tell me which side and which knee to pull up? I wish I could find my copy of her book. Many thanks,

  • Lynn

I went to one of those stores that deal with nutrition and they told me any bottle that said full body cleanse or full body detox would work as long as it was as least seven days or more long would clean all the areas. The liver, kidneys, colon it all. I bought some. Then I came across the parasite one and bought three bottles since it said that’s what it takes. So if I do this parasite cleanse will this other full body detox work on the rest or will I need a colon cleanse too. And if I need a colon cleanse will it work after that or just what will it work on saying full body. I’m completely lost. Please help I really need to clean my system and I need to do it right. But cant afford to spend an arm and a leg on it. Thank you Lynn

    • Sara Beth

It is really hard for us to respond to claims from other products, but most full body cleanses, although good for the whole body, aren’t true cleanses. For example, taking cleansing herbs for the liver can give them a boost, but doesn’t have the same effect as a full cleanse that involves fasting and expelling gall stones for the better part of a day. Cleansing each organ takes time and a lifetime of toxins built up in the organs and tissues of most people are not going to be cleansed in 7 days. We know starting cleansing can be overwhelming, so we have this blog to help you get started: or working with a practitioner can take the guess work out of what’s appropriate for you. We have a practitioner directory: or the most cost effective way is to submit a saliva sample: Taking the time to cleanse properly is well worth it!

    nice post

  • Summer

Thanks for this post. Very informative. I’m wondering whats the most beneficial in terms of the parasite and bowel cleanse. Should I finish the whole month program for the parasite cleanse before I can begin the colon cleanse or can they overlap at some point?

    • Star

      Hi Summer,

Some people can handle doing more than one cleanse, but most people do best taking one first and then the other, so that is a judgement call for you to make. The Wormwood Kit can be intense for some people and mellow for others, same for the Bowel Cleanse Kit, but you won’t know until you get started. Maybe start the Wormwood Kit and see how you feel once you’re a couple of weeks in.

  • Serayah

This website was informative and awesome. I know contrary to what my doc says, I’m definitely infected with parasites. I have been underweight for over 10 years now, no thyroid issue, celiac, etc. I know I do have a high metabolism and I walk all the time. So for me, this seems to be an issue that needs to be dealt with immediately. I want to try this Hanna’s cleanse and pray that it helps. I want my size 5-6 back.

    • Star

Thanks for your comment Serayah. Unfortunately, we hear similar stories from other customers. Let us know how your cleanse goes!

  • Kayte

This is inaccurate information. How are you going to do a parasite cleanse first? Your kidneys colon and liver have to be up for that job.

    • Star

Actually, it can be dangerous to do a liver cleanse if you have parasites as certain ones can get stuck in the bile ducts. As stated in a previous response, this is a general recommendation. If someone has kidney or bowel issues, it may be more appropriate for them to start with one of those kits, then do a parasite cleanse and then a liver cleanse. We are not all the same and knowing your own body and using a little common sense goes a long way.

  • Anni

How long must one wait in between the cleanses? I would like to do each of these in the order mentioned above but not sure about the time frame and how long you wait in between?

    • Star

      Hi Anni,

There isn’t a set amount of time to wait between cleanses. You don’t want to wait more than a few months usually, but most people will naturally take a break between them and then when they feel ready, start the next one; that could be a couple weeks or a couple months. Everyone is different, so these are general guidelines. If you feel you need guidance, we always let people know there are practitioners available to work with. They don’t work for Hanna’s Herb Shop, but many studied Hanna’s work and use her protocols. You can take a look here: Happy cleansing!

      • Anni

Thank you for your reply! I have another question, do these cleanses work well if you don’t use a zapping product such as Hulda Clark suggested? I am not too familiar with the work of Hannah Kroeger but some people online seem to say that you need to “zap” as well to get the most benefits. I don’t see anywhere where Hannah’s work stated that (I briefly looked) thank you!

        • Star

          Hi Anni,
Hanna did not say zapping was necessary, but she and Hulda Clark respected each other and each others work (in fact Hulda Clark recommended Hanna’s Wormwood Combination, which is part of the Wormwood Kit for many years) and we do carry Zappers as well as Hulda Clark’s books. We have a lot of customers that use the kits without the zapper and some who do use it. I think the zapper is another tool to consider in your health arsenal, but would be more of an addition to cleansing than a necessity for the kits to work.

  • Jana R

If you don’t do the bowel cleanse after the parasite cleanse you can end up with dead parasites in your colon. Dead parasites can give off toxins.

The bowel cleanse AFTER the parasite cleanse is important, even if you wait a week or two to do it.

The order of all the cleanses as suggested here by Hanna (using their products) is important.

On another note, I have gone on the Candida/Yeast-free diet simultaneously, while doing the Parasite Cleanse with great results. I continued the diet while on the Bowel Cleanse (which I started a week later) for even greater results. So I was on the diet for about 50 consecutive days.

The diet I use is from a Holistic Doctor who highly recommends avoiding ALL fermented foods as well as gluten, white flour, yeast, wheat, sugar, etc., while on the Parasite Cleanse & Candida / Yeast-free diet, and then slowly introduce fermented foods back into the diet after cleaning up the yeast overgrowth and parasites. Worked great for me and for others. Hope that helps.

  • Janet

I’d like some advice – interested in whole body cleanse. In two days I undergo a colonoscopy, requiring a rough (chemical) clean out. Eating a low residue diet (no fiber). Afterwards have a good probiotics to ingest and plan to ease into solid food again. How should I proceed with total body cleanse? Immediately do parasites, need to herbally clean digestive tract after colonoscopy? thanks

    • Star

      Hi Janet,
Usually a colonoscopy, although not natural, does clean out the colon. Because you are saying it is a chemical agent being used, you may need to work with a Hanna Kroeger practitioner to help supplement what you are already doing with your doctor and find the right approach. Although Hanna Kroeger Practitioners do not work for Hanna’s Herb Shop, we do have a practitioner directory on our website as a resource: Keep in mind that many of them will work long-distance with you if there isn’t one right in your area.

I read about the vibropathic parasite flux drops, from the liver, lungs, intestines…dio you take those along with the kit? And if you can find out, when the vibropathic liquid is mailed out, does it lose its frequency because of having to go through electronic equipment?

    • Star

      Hi Nancy,

Taking specific Vibropathics along with the kit if needed is common. The Vibropathics do not lose potency or frequency in transit. Thanks for your question!

    What about the Colon Cleanse?

I remember a few yrs ago doing the Parasite Cleanse followed by the Bowel Cleanse and then the other cleanses, and that there was also a Colon Cleanse somewhere in there, although it’s been a few years so maybe I am mistaken.

As I recall the Bowel & Colon were two separate cleanses. Has that changed? Was/is there still a Colon Cleanse? Thx JR

  • Narie

I also recall a colon cleanse, a separate bowel and colon cleanse, one where you had to drink *A LOT* of water, like 3 glasses before each meal while taking the capsules, before each meal. So it involved drinking 9 glasses of water per day, not counting any other liquids.
