It’s time for another great giveaway! Check out the details below for instructions on how to enter to win a gift basket with 5 essential oils from Aura Cacia with 2 carrier oils. Tea Tree, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Oregano, and Lavender (all organic) with Apricot Kernel and Sweet Almond carrier oils. A $70 value!
Somewhere in the Andes, about halfway through a fourteen hour long bus ride, my bottle of tea tree oil spilled in my canvas courier bag. Ah, the warm scent of tea tree oil…. Ten years later I still have the bag and when I look at it I can smell tea tree oil. When I look at the pictures I took through the window on that bus ride I can still smell tea tree oil. And, when I put tea tree oil on my cuts or bites I’m reminded of that trip. Most people may think of Australia when they smell tea tree oil, but I will always think of Ecuador.
Our sense of smell is powerful. The nose communicates with the amygdale and the hippocampus in the brain where memories and emotions are stored. This is why a familiar scent can take us back to times and places that might otherwise be lost to us forever. It can take us to places we may never really go or trigger feelings associated with a specific time or place.
Aromatherapy, however, is more than just a virtual vacation. From homes to health spas to hospitals, today essential oils are used to treat a myriad of physical and emotional troubles. They are massaged into the skin and muscles to provide relief or comfort and some food grade essential oils (such as Young Living Oils) can be ingested under the direction of an expert. While the most common use of essential oils is inhalation, there are many benefits for the body as a whole.
In the tradition of “sending out good vibrations” Hanna’s is giving away a gift basket of essential oils that includes some of our personal favorites, as well as a couple of carrier oils with which the essential oils can be mixed. It is generally recommended that essential oils be blended (or cut) with carrier oils because in their pure form they can be quite strong and potentially irritating to the skin. Our gift to you includes five essential oils which can be used to color your world with wonderful scents, soothe your cold or even clean your house. Included in the gift basket you will find:
Apricot Kernal and Sweet Almond Skin Care Oils, both with vitamin E. Use these oils as carrier oils, massage oils, bath oils, or apply them after the shower and enjoy their skin nourishing qualities. Add peppermint oil to the almond and make a festive holiday gift.
Eucalyptus: Eucalyptus is a great cold and flu season ally when used as an inhalant (fill a bowl with steamy water and add a drop of oil). Eucalyptus is used to clear up congestion and coughing, is great for sinusitis, bronchitis and even has anti-microbial properties. Adding a few drops to bath water can help with skin infections.
Lavender: It is said that the term “Aromatherapy” was first used by French Chemist Rene Maurice Gattefosse when he discovered that lavender healed his burn. Today it is most commonly recognized for its calming properties. Combine it with citrus, clove, or patchouli and water to make a room spray. Add it to the carrier oil and enjoy giving yourself or your loved one a relaxing massage.
Peppermint: The opposite of lavender, peppermint invigorates! Inhaling peppermint can help to clear the head. It also works well for nausea, motion sickness or headache. Massaging peppermint into sore muscles can help to relieve tension.
Oregano: For insomnia and nervous tension use 2-3 drops of Oregano essential oil in an oil diffuser, or add 8-10 drops in bath water before bedtime. Oregano, like eucalyptus can help with coughing, congestion and sinus inflammation.
Tea Tree Oil: My personal favorite. Put tea tree oil on cuts and bites, acne, sores of all types. Its antibacterial and anti-fungal properties aid in quick healing. A few drops of tea tree oil added to water and dish soap make a great all-purpose house cleaner. If you add olive oil to the mixture it can be used to clean wood floors. Inhaling tea tree oil’s warm scent is good for the respiratory system, and to my mind, the scent of tea tree oil is good for the heart.
