Interferons: Key to Your Immune System

vivrusentryDaily cellular life chugs along on a typical day. Daily tasks include absorbing nutrients, creating ATP, working with other cells, and multiplying. Cellular life is easy, until it goes wrong. Viruses can break through the cellular membrane at any moment, and when they do, a cell faces destruction. Quietly waiting for the action to begin, interferon proteins sit deep within cells, preparing for this moment. Interferons serve as a news alert system in your body. When a virus breaks in, interferon proteins go to work warning every other cell in the surrounding area so that they can prepare.  Interferons are a vital part of your immune system.

How do interferons work?

interferonWhen a virus enters a cell and taps into the nucleus, the cell’s function completely changes. Instead of producing regular healthy cell parts, it begins to produce virus proteins, which come together to form more viruses. Those new viruses burst through the membrane of the host cell, looking for new cells to prey on. When your cells have healthy levels of interferon, there’s an extra step. Once a cell becomes infected, interferon proteins flee from the cell, carrying a message about the virus with them. The interferons attach themselves to nearby cells, transferring information about the virus. When the newly formed viruses finally escape from the originally infected cell (now destructed by the virus), they attempt to enter healthy cells. Luckily, these healthy cells are able to prepare for the invasion because of interferon’s message. The cell destructs the virus. Watch a step-by-step slideshow of this process.

Naturally Boost Your Interferon Count

There are a lot of ways you can help protect yourself from sickness. A well charged immune system can be the difference between getting sick and staying healthy. One of the best ways to super charge your immune system is to eat nutrient dense foods. In that sense, you really are what you eat! Hanna Kroeger had a long list of tips for improving health with special diets. She created an “Interferon Booster” recipe specifically for fueling the immune system.  Made with a base of cottage cheese, this snack can be enjoyed at any time of the day. Cottage cheese is high in protein and low in fat, making it a healthy choice! Loaded with calcium, traditionally prepared cottage cheese even contains probiotics. Probiotics play an important role in your body’s defense system. It’s also a great source of vitamin B-12 and phosphorous. The best part? Cottage cheese is versatile! Hanna developed several ways to prepare the Interferon Booster. Try them all–you’re sure to find one you like!

  1. Blend 1 cup cottage cheese and 2 tablespoons walnut or almond oil by hand on in a blender.
  2. Top the blended base with one of these combinations recommended by Hanna:

Finely grated horseradish and potatoes, buckwheat, and/or stewed carrots

Finely cut parsley, celery, and paprika

Add diced tomatoes and service with rice, bulgur, or rye bread

Top the cheese with finely chopped herbs such as chives, onion, parsley, and paprika. Choose herbs that will boost your immunity.

Heap the foundation cheese mixture on top of lettuce leaves

Split the cheese mixture into thirds. Blend one part with tomatoes or beets, a second part with greens (like spinach), and the last part with an egg yolk. Layer the three parts to make a colorful snack, and garnish with cucumbers, tomatoes, radishes, or other vegetables.

For dessert, sweeten the cheese mixture with honey. Add a sliced banana, grated apple, and a sprinkling of oats.

Stir in a swirl of honey and top with slivered and toasted filberts and almonds. Use this as a dip for fruit.
